The Edge of Almost

The edge of almost is its own kind of place. Almost said. Almost did. Almost left. The almost is heavier than the doing — because it's still alive. The done thing closes; the almost-done thing keeps offering itself. People can stand at the edge of almost for years, mistaking the standing for safety. Naming the edge does not push you off it. It just makes the place you are standing more visible, which is sometimes all you need to take the next step.
