Brevigrace

/BREV-ih-grayss/·Latin brevis (brief) + gratia (grace)

2026-06-21

Brevigrace is the brief grace of a stranger's kindness — a door held, a seat given up, a returned wallet — that you will never repay and they will never remember. It arrives without introduction and leaves without waiting to be thanked. For a moment the world is gentler than it had to be, and the gentleness is anonymous, which is what makes it pure. There is no ledger. The person who offered it has already turned the corner. What stays is smaller than gratitude and larger than nothing: the quiet evidence that strangers, asked for nothing, sometimes give it anyway. Naming it does not put you in their debt. It only lets you notice how often you are carried by hands you'll never see again.
